I’m obsessed with TED right now. For those of you who don’t know , I’m not talking about the dude, although if your name is Ted and you’re reading this, I’m sure you’re cool too. So anyway TED is Technology +Entertainment+ Design , and basically they’re non-profit that’s dedicated to spreading ideas. No really that’s their tagline “idea’s worth spreading.”
I’m graduating and despite the fact that I’m looking for a better 9-5 , cubicles are not my friend. So I was on TED, and I clicked Happiness as a topic and I scroll through all these pictures of speakers and the headlines of their talks. So I’m totally judging a book by its cover , but nearly everyone who was speaking was wearing a suit; and that to me says they care too much about formalities, (Don’t judge me, the devil is in the details) which to me in regards to happiness doesn’t seem logical. So I keep scrolling until I see GARY VAY-NER-CHUK, dude’s in a jeans and a tee; ding ding ding we’ve got a winner.
Now if you’re sick of reading me , go youtube him @ Web 2.0 or better yet RailsConf 2010. Careful there’s profanity….just saying.
If you’re still reading (thanks); I beg you to check those out , because I really do think it will make you want to be a better person. Anyway I spent 90 mins that I had allocated for studying watching Gary speak. Firstly not to kiss his ass, but he is one of the most compelling speakers I’ve ever heard. I’ll admit I’m kind of a product of my generation add to that there’s the fact that society has been teaching me that every action should be a means to an end; and it’s amazing that I could retain his message and that I really respect him because of his ideas. And the dude isn’t even paying me.
Although to be honest, if given the opportunity I would totally work for him for free. Dude’s a genius, again I hate to make it sound like I’m idealizing him (that might be because he reminds me a lot of my big brother). Maybe you won’t like him , and I’m sure there are people smarter than him that I haven’t heard about. But fyi I’d totally love to learn about them too, so reply with that info if one person in particular pops in your head. Kay ? Thanks!
Back to the point though, I went through high school trying to do everything I could to get college admissions to notice me, and I’ve spent a good portion of college trying to get employers to notice me. And it’s NONSENSE, because the corporate environment is rubbish, and it’s not where I thrive. So I’m going to find a way to do things I love everyday, because Gary said that anyone who wants it bad enough, can make a living doing what they love and I trust Gary.
Another reason why Gary is freaking amazing is because he totally justified my savior complex by making me understand how I can use it to make money. That’s right you can be a good person, keep the values Mum and Pops taught you and still earn a living. Internal conflict, resolved !
If you know me, you probably know I care about people and if you’re a friend and something isn’t going your way, my first instinct is to rack my brain do everything I can to try to help you. I believe in Karma, and that making others happy will ultimately make you happy. That’s reflected on my CV as well I’ve done things like volunteering and event planning even the menial tasks I do now days are considered “customer service.” And the crazy thing is, I used to think that caring too much about real people that could be effected by my decisions, would be my ultimate down fall in business.
So okay the economy sucks, whatever! Work with what you have, right now business is personal !!! And in my opinion if you’re genuine, business just got a hell of a lot more interesting.
Sorry if this is super primitive, but I don’t really want to steal his thunder or give you the cliff notes, because my version won’t be half as good. So don’t be lazy go watch those videos or read his books.
Let’s bottom line it, myself like many of you want a lot out of life. But the big question is do you want it for the right reasons?
Here’s the thing, I much rather spend 3 hours a night sleeping , because my passion keeps me up at night. Rather than because I’m trying to find an excuse to get out of work, or because I feel so stifled by the BS bureaucracy of the corporation I work for.
So guess what? I’m done trying to figure out which one career path I want to get on. I’m going to do whatever I have to do to chase my passions and use those to make a life for myself. Or at least try to….cause you know I’m young and naive but hopefully not too easily manipulated.
PS- if you’re doing something that makes you genuinely happy, please tell me about it. I’d honestly really love to hear about it.
PPS- talking about ROI check out the Halfway Sky Project , also on TED and how others can seriously benefit from non-profits like the Heifer Project.
So there are two new food trends sweeping LA right now. One of which is the food truck, which I actually don’t mind. Especially because it gives some very creative chefs the opportunity to make a variety of really good food very readily available.
The other trend is cupcakes. And I’m like everyone else, some times you just can’t help but indulge in one of these cute treats. But I honestly think that right now a lot of these coveted little shops are pretty over rated. And despite the marketing ploys and oh so creative branding of companies like Sprinkles and Crumbs , their idea’s aren’t terribly original, their ingredients aren’t that high quality, and they’re so limited in what they can offer.
And another thing, why are they so huge? All I’m saying is that there’s a reason why the amuse-bouche has retained it’s charm for all these years. I’ve got a major sweet tooth, but ugh just the thought of one of these gigantic over processed cupcakes…yuck!
But I think that also has something to do with the way they make the frosting. Most of the time it isn’t butter cream, or whipped cream, or cream cheese or any other type of cream but rather OIL.
And you people know that red velvet is just chocolate cake with what passes as cream cheese icing and red coloring food, right? So why all the hype?
I miss the real old school bakeries, that changed their menu offerings with the seasons. Where people would buy fresh bread every few days. And there were endless possibilities of pastries and desserts and coffees and sandwiches and pot pies etcetera etcetera etcetera … maybe that’s just me though.
I’m sorry, I’m being a food snob. What do you think? Got a favorite cupcake shop, that will make me eat my words? Or a food truck you think every one should stalk?
Keeeeee Wiiiiiiiii! Wouldn’t that be such an adorable pet name ? It almost makes me want to go out and get a pet turtle just so I can call him Kiwi. Ok I lie I’ve always kind of wanted a turtle as a pet, but I have tactile issues with amphibious creatures among other things.
They are available in green and yellow. But see how the flesh is lighter than normal? That’s not just because I’m using a dinky mobile phone with a 3.2 mp camera. I’m pretty sure that’s how they are. Now why are they amazing you ask? Well firstly they’re sweeter than the average kiwi, but not just sugary sweet. They taste like a kiwi strawberry hybrid, it’s two fruits for the price of one!
I think what I’m getting at here is that Kiwis are under rated, and that on a hot day, taken straight from the fridge, they’re a very refreshing snack!
OK so what ? It’s just fruit right? WRONG! I’m of the whole your body is a temple school of thought. I’m also a lacto vegetarian , but I promise I ♥LOVE ♥ food. I just think we should apply the Coco Chanel Theory to our food, especially in today’s market which is filled with over processed foods.
And by that I mean simple yet delicious , uncomplicated food. It should make you feel good (cause lord knows we’re all guilty of eating our feelings every once in a while), but it should also be relatively good for you. Delicate flavor profile’s that flow along your taste buds like waves, rather than overwhelm you with the salt content of a tsunami.
Mkay that’s all I got on the Kooky Kiwi’s.
I’d say “Hi” to everyone but let be realistic here, your Mum probably has more followers than I do at this point… Regardless I now have a blog! (Yay!) Although, I’m still a little confused as to how all of the functions work, so don’t expect any spectacular displays just yet. But if you have some tips or tricks you’d like to pass along there should be a comments section somewhere down below, or off to the side. Feel free to also ask questions too , but in the interest of full disclosure I can’t promise I’ll answer them, nor can I promise that I won’t mock you for asking them.
Consequently I’m also attempting to use twitter as well @dini_says but more on that later. Right about here is where a normal person would attempt to describe what they’re blog is going to be about…I’m not going to do that. Firstly because I’m not normal and I’d like to be fair and give you guys a head’s up straight from the get go about that, I make no apologies for doing things my own way. Secondly, because I’d honestly rather not limit myself.
What I can say is that a lot of social media today is being used as an outlet for mellow dramatic angst, and it drives me bonkers! That’s not to say that I’m little Miss Sunshine, but let’s face it for most of us life isn’t that bad, and it would be a lot better if we got some self-esteem, focused on what we do well and what we need to do to make our situations better.
So you probably will see cynical and acerbic commentary on random things I see happening in the world. BUT for the most part this blog will probably be a collection of things I’m passionate about. And my hope is that those little things during the day will make your life just the slightest bit easier, (notice how I set you expectations rather low? that’s in an effort to keep from disappointing you in the long run…just saying) maybe it’ll make you laugh, or smile, or maybe it’ll just be a conversation point for you when you get tired of surfing the web, and decide you want to interact with the people around you again.
That’s all for now , but you can expect a post on kiwi’s in a bit.
